For an optically anisotropic crystal, the refractive index varies linearly with the polarizability in the crystal. So, when the light passes through such crystals, the transmission features will be different due to the different polarizability of incidence light and the birefringence phenomenon may occur. The crystals are widely used in the application of beam displacers, polarizing optics (Glan Laser, Glan Taylor, Glan Thompson, Wollaston and Rochon), optical isolators, circulators and interleaver, etc.
